Switch 2: The new GameCube controller will be more useful than expected

A cutting-edge Mario Kart, a 120 Hz LCD screen, enough power to play Cyberpunk 2077 in portable mode... The public doesn't care about these secondary flourishes: the whole point of the Nintendo Switch 2 lies in its GameCube catalog! At least, that's what retrogamers who are still too nostalgic to be able to move on to anything other than The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker will tell you. And they're not entirely wrong. The addition of a GameCube catalog in the Nintendo Switch Online + Additional Pack formula (accessible exclusively on the new console) makes the annual billing of 39.99 euros (or 69.99 euros for the family version) much more justifiable.

It must be said that with the move to the Switch 2, it is not certain that players will find a real interest in receiving the DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 as part of their subscription. The good old GameCube is therefore establishing itself as the spearhead of the new generation Additional Pack formula and Nintendo is not doing things by halves. While the idea of being able to launch an F-Zero race in the subway or a game of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance on the throne is already enough to make you dream, the release of a wireless GameCube controller for Switch 2 is also making a splash. Unfortunately, players were quickly disillusioned when the small print of the trailer indicated that the controller will be “only compatible with games from the Nintendo GameCube catalog – Nintendo Classics“. But while pre-orders for the accessory have just opened for all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers (the first wave was previously reserved for players who met the conditions for pre-ordering a console), the manufacturer is putting an end to confusion to reassure potential buyers.

A fully compatible controller but with some flaws

Contacted by the teams at Nintendo Life, the Kyoto-based company has finally clarified the situation. The manufacturer confirms that the GameCube controller will be usable outside of the Nintendo Classics application. But since it was designed to replicate the original controller, without adding any features exclusive to the Switch 2, some games will be difficult to play with this peripheral.

Ultimately, this wireless GameCube controller will behave like any wired controller that could be connected to the first Switch via a dedicated adapter. In concrete terms, buyers of the GameCube controller developed for the Nintendo Classics application will also be able to use it naturally on Super Smash Bros Ultimate or even Super Mario 3D All Stars, while other titles will require some concessions. The GameChat, ZL, Home, and screenshot buttons will still be located on the top of the controller to ensure maximum comfort. Once again, the Kyoto-based company has demonstrated very complicated communication despite a simple answer.

Switch 2: The new GameCube controller will be more useful than expected

The GameCube controller is now available on the MyNintendoStore for all users with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, regardless of their playtime and membership statistics.
