While waiting for The Elder Scrolls VI, which is highly scrutinized by an entire community, Bethesda is keeping us waiting by remastering one of the best titles in the franchise, released nearly 20 years ago: Oblivion. A divisive overhaul, just like an element that the studio chose to censor. The Reddit sphere has taken over the debate.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Gets a Makeover
Under wraps for several months (although we saw it coming thanks to the leaks), the remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has made a splash on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. Bethesda surprised everyone with a video announcing the immediate launch of the game, originally released in 2006.
One of the very best games in the franchise comes with some promises, which almost make us think of a remake rather than a dumb and nasty remaster. Powered by Unreal Engine 5,Oblivion refines its textures and lighting. A layer of polish that can also be seen on the character models. Customization is more advanced than in the original, with faces redesigned to fit the game engine. Also, the remaster of the 2006 title borrows some elements that made the success of its sequel: Skyrim - the most accomplished title in the license released in 2011 - such as health that gradually regenerates, the clairvoyance spell, difficulty levels, and the infiltration mechanic.
Fans are divided over this censorship
Without revolutionizing the formula and without wanting to harm the long-time fans, Bethesda therefore adds a few small touches to make the adventure more enjoyable and in line with the current decade. But some changes that may escape those who haven't tried the original are raising eyebrows among fans of the Cyrodiil universe. Bethesda has chosen to modify the Huntsman Vest - a lightweight hunter/tracker outfit modified by some modders to make it sexier, revealing cleavage and a glimpse of the character's midriff. Unfortunately for those who liked to wear it on their character, Bethesda ignored the success generated by the mod and readjusted the outfit, preferring a more classic design of a vest made of animal skin. It was on the game's associated Reddit that players expressed their dissatisfaction. "It has nothing to do with the character not being sexy enough," the author of the post immediately justifies. He (and others) points to the issue of nostalgia as one of the main selling points of this remaster, according to him. "I played the entire original game with this character in this specific outfit, and not being able to recreate it spoils the experience a little bit." data-embed-height="546">They changed the female huntsman vest

A feeling shared by some players, while others - on the contrary - find that the new outfit fits better with the game. The debate surrounding the vest is not new. In the original, a good portion of gamers did not understand the hyper-sexualization of the armor, far from an outfit worn by women in the Oblivion imagination. In response, modders have created alternatives aimed at offering more modest and functional female armor, such as the "Unsexy" mod.
While this detail will likely be addressed for those who care about it with the release of a specific mod, Oblivion suffers from a larger problem. Labeled as a remaster developed with Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion is only sprinkled with it according to many fans. Unusual menus worthy of old-school RPGs, bugs, and drops in frame rates are enough to provoke outrage for a game sold at 55 euros.
