Season 2 of The Last of Us is coming soon to HBO, and the wait is immense. But another piece of news is already causing a lot of talk. Because, as is often the case in the worlds of video games and series, not everything is always rosy. So, what exactly is happening with the adaptation?
A faithful... but more tense sequel for The Last of Us
So we can only learn that Craig Mazin, co-creator and showrunner of The Last of Us, will not continue the adventure beyond this new season. A decision that could well change the future of the franchise on television.
Indeed, despite the success of the series and his obvious passion for the universe, Craig Mazin confirmed that he would not stay after season 2. In an interview with Variety, he clearly explains that his work on TLOU is finished. Even if Neil Druckmann decides to create a third installment, Mazin will not return as showrunner.
As a reminder, this second season will adapt The Last of Us Part 2, the game released in 2020. The story picks up five years after the events of the first season. Joel and Ellie are no longer the same. Their bond has weakened, and this tension will be at the heart of the new episodes.
And after?
As for the casting, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are reprising their roles. Gabriel Luna (Tommy) and Rutina Wesley (Maria) will also be back. And as is often the case in a new season, new faces are arriving. We will notably find Kaitlyn Dever in the role of Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, but also Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Wright. Suffice to say that this sequel promises to be intense, both emotionally and narratively.
HBO has shown in the past that a strong universe can continue without its original creators. The example of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is in everyone's mind. The universe of The Last of Us is rich. Spin-offs are therefore entirely possible. New stories, other characters, other locations... But without Craig Mazin, the atmosphere could change. This departure raises a real question: will the series be able to maintain its unique tone without one of its main architects? Wait and see. Season 2 will premiere on April 14 in France on Max.
