After a very long legal battle between Google and the American justice system in the context of the antitrust trial, the American Justice Department has asked Amit Mehta, the federal judge, to request Google to sell Chrome.
This order comes as part of Google's antitrust trial, where an action brought by the US Department of Justice and several states that accuse the company of abusing its dominant position.
If the outcome of the trial is unfavorable to Google, the firm could be forced to separate from its web browser. But if this news is very badly received by Google, it seems to give wings to OpenAI…
A web browser $15 billion
It was before the Washington DC court that we heard Nick Turley, product manager at OpenAI, speak in the Google antitrust trial.
Having spoken to the judge to discuss the solutions to be implemented if the sale of Google Chrome were to be confirmed, the latter stated that this acquisition could interest OpenAI.
Very quickly, many specialists then wanted to estimate the price of this sale. According to a Bloomberg article this Wednesday written by Leah Nylen and Davey Alba, the price could reach $15 billion in total, if not more.
To justify this analysis, it is essentially the number of users that has been taken into account, with currently 3 billion Internet users who would have the opportunity to use Google Chrome every day.
A strategic choice for OpenAI?
While the amount of $15 billion is surprising, it could well be part of a well-thought-out strategy by OpenAI. With artificial intelligence being omnipresent in new software on the market, the company could take advantage of this to evolve Chrome in this way.
