If you were thinking of purchasing an electric vehicle soon, be aware that a purchase will now cost a little more. As revealed by the newspaper Auto Plus in its April 18 edition and relayed by the media Automobile Propre, a tax exemption that new owners of electric cars benefited from will be removed as of May 1, 2025.

From this date, electric vehicles will be subject to the same rules as thermal vehicles with regard to the regional tax on the registration certificate. Until now, the registration certificate for electric vehicles was very inexpensive. It cost 13.76 euros, equivalent to a fixed amount of 11 euros and a shipping fee of 2.76 euros. But the addition of the regional tax on the registration certificate, the amount of which is based on on the tax horsepower (CV), will significantly increase the bill.

This change is provided for in the 2025 finance law. Concretely, the regions now have the choice of granting this gift to consumers or not, whereas they were obliged to do so in recent years. As expected, they will largely eliminate this tax advantage. Only residents of Hauts-de-France will continue to benefit from the rebate. For the rest of the country, registering your electric vehicle will cost more, as much as for a thermal vehicle.

Aids encouraging people to switch to electric are gradually being withdrawn or becoming less generous, while the State and the Regions are having difficulty balancing their budgets and are looking to make savings wherever they can. As a reminder, the budget for aid for purchasing an electric car was halved this year, going from 1.5 billion euros in 2024 to 700 million euros in 2025.
