What does the AI device developed by OpenAI and Jony Ive look like? The question has been on everyone's lips since the announcement that the creator of ChatGPT had acquired the startup io, created by the former chief designer at Apple. We learned that development of this project began 18 months ago, and based on the few clues released recently, it will be neither a smartphone nor a pair of glasses.
The device is intended to be discreet, it can fit in a pocket or sit on a desk. All of this paints a hollow picture of a small box... the prototype of which would be "slightly larger than an iPod shuffle," proposes Ming-Chi Kuo. The screenless portable music player has undergone several designs over the course of its career, from a "stick" format to a lighter, including an aluminum square.
The final design and features could still evolve considerably between now and the start of production, which is planned for 2027 (Sam Altman reportedly plans to unveil it in late 2026). The analyst, who has good connections in the electronics industry, adds that the product will have cameras and microphones for detecting its environment, that it will be screenless, and that it will be possible to wear the device... around the neck, like a necklace.
Jony Ive has criticized the Ai Pin, calling it "very bad." It's true that Humane's smart badge wasn't a resounding success. But his own device might well look a lot like it! Design won't be everything, however; it's actually the software and AI that will be essential to validate the value of such a product (if there is one).
