The future of streaming platforms lies in broadcasting live events! Netflix has been offering WWE wrestling and American football matches (at Christmas) for some time now, and Disney+ is no exception. The Guardian reports that the service has landed the rights to the Women's Champions League for the next five seasons (2025-2030)!
And that's the goal for Disney+
The flagship competition will be broadcast in several European countries, including the United Kingdom and France, according to information from L’Équipe. It remains to be seen whether Disney+ will take advantage of this to request a price increase on its subscriptions, unless the platform wants to make the Champions League a loss leader. A formal announcement could be made this Friday.
The last four seasons of the League have been offered by Dazn throughout Europe. "By broadcasting every match for free over the last four seasons, we have increased the visibility of the competition, resulting in a 71% increase in total viewing time," explains the broadcaster.
Disney+ seems to have pulled out all the stops to win the auction, both in terms of cash and production. We can only hope for a top-notch broadcast! Women's football is attracting more and more viewers and broadcasters around the world. Netflix didn't make a mistake: the service will in fact broadcast the next two World Cups in 2027 and 2031 in the United States.
