An immediate success on Netflix, the animated miniseries Asterix & Obelix: The Battle of the Chiefs has garnered unanimous acclaim from fans. Featuring a star-studded cast, as well as the absurd humor that made Alain Chabat's career, the Netflix project is a slap in the face, both visually and narratively. Since its release on April 30, The Battle of the Chiefs has become one of the most-watched content on the platform with the red N. While no season 2 has yet been officially confirmed, it's hard to imagine the entertainment giant will settle for a one-off. For his part, Alain Chabat hints at ambitious new projects centered around the famous Gauls.
A sequel in the pipeline?
The end of the miniseries wraps up the plot of volume 7, leaving little room for a direct sequel. As in all his adventures, the character ends his narrative arc around a banquet, and all's well that ends well. But the Asterix universe, rich with several dozen albums, has not had its last word. Asked about the future of the saga, Alain Chabat is not closing any doors. "There are many other possible stories," he confided to our colleagues at Ouest France. The director does not rule out the possibility of adapting other albums or even creating new stories for Netflix. One new project is notably being discussed, with the adaptation of the unfinished album Asterix and the Circus, written by RenĂ© Goscinny shortly before his death and found by his daughter Anne. At the time, the latter had contacted Alain Chabat to finish it. “Why not? How can I put it, it’s beyond responsibility. It’s very intimidating, but I have story ideas.”
While The Battle of the Chiefs doesn’t lend itself to a direct sequel, everything indicates that Netflix and Alain Chabat will focus on successive adaptations of other stories by the famous duo. The support of the rights holders, the creative freedom granted to the director of Mission Cleopatra and the public’s enthusiasm for the Gaul’s latest adventures leave little doubt about the success of a sequel.
While waiting to learn more, fans can watch the five episodes of this mini-series, which brings the Gallic village back to life. Asterix and Obelix haven't finished making waves on Netflix: while season 2 isn't official yet, the future of the saga promises to be full of surprises and menhirs.
