Squid Game season 3: the first trailer says a lot (and it’s a shame)

Squid Game season 3: the first trailer says a lot (and it’s a shame)

It didn't take long. Less than six months after the release of season 2, Squid Game is already preparing its return to Netflix. After two episodes that marked the history of the American platform, it's already time for the deadly competition to deliver its final tests. Season 3 will be the last. Before the launch of these final episodes on June 27, the red N is treating its subscribers to some never-before-seen footage. It's a golden opportunity for viewers to glean clues about what the future holds for Gi-Hun. Things aren't looking good for the winner of the previous edition, who is hungry for revenge. While the finale cultivated the mystery surrounding Gi-hun's participation in the second part of the games, after his failed insurrection and the death of his childhood friend, the trailer already provides some initial answers...

He appears in one of the coffins used to evacuate the bodies of the losers before he is found facing a new test. The renegade will not be dismissed; the master of the game still wants to play with him. Netflix is giving in to the trend of trailers that look like menus rather than incentives to watch. We understand a lot of things.

First, a gumball machine is used to divide the players into two teams. The mother and her son, at the epicenter of the previous season, will have to fight each other. Only one of them will survive. We also hear a baby cry, suggesting that player Kim Jun-hee is going to give birth to her child in the arena. Moreover, we see Hwang Joon-ho, the Front Man's brother. He seems to be getting closer to his goal: to find the island hosting the games and put an end to them.

A new hit for the red N?

While season 2 wasn't unanimously acclaimed, it must be admitted that Squid Game is a special case for the red N. The first season was launched without a major promotional campaign and quickly became one of the most-watched series in the history of the American giant. Hwang Dong-hyuk's creation has 265 million views for its first batch of episodes since its launch in 2021. The second season fared much worse with 192 million, but this drop in audience figures should be put into perspective, as it still allows it to be in second place in the ranking of the most watched non-English series on Netflix worldwide.

It's hard to imagine this grand finale going unnoticed, as viewers should be numerous from the first day of broadcast. The fact remains that the creator, who had no ambition to continue after season 1, doesn't really have the right to make a mistake. There are only six short episodes to conclude, to confirm the victory of Gi-hun or, on the contrary, of the Front Man and the organizers of these sadistic games. One would be tempted to say, given the gloom of the series and the pessimistic view it takes of society, that the hero's path is already mapped out.

The date is therefore set for June 27 on the American platform.
