AI trends are coming thick and fast on social media: on one hand, Studio Ghibli-style visuals; on the other, the famous "starter pack" that humorously summarizes an individual's style or personality. Google Photos seems to want to draw inspiration from these trends to enrich its application. In its latest version, a new option called "Remix" has been spotted. It could soon allow you to reinterpret your memories with an AI twist, without using a third-party tool.
Remix: Google Photos wants to reinvent your photos with generative AI
According to an analysis of the Google Photos APK file (v7.29), the Mountain View firm is working on a new feature called Remix. In just a few clicks, users could apply predefined artistic styles to their photos saved in the cloud. The first styles mentioned are Japanese animation and the claymation effect, but other variations are expected to be added.
This function would be activated from the "+" button in the interface, and would apply to both individual photos and "Moments". It is clearly inspired by recent AI trends that are taking off online, where Internet users are transforming their portraits into animated characters.
A structured and customizable tool to prevent abuse
Google seems to have anticipated certain potential abuses: messages related to policy violations already appear in the code, a sign that safeguards will be put in place to prevent malicious misuse. In addition, users will be able to regenerate Remixes at will if they are not satisfied with the result, and of course save those they wish to keep.
Another new feature for Google Photos that capitalizes on the current craze for transformed AI images. It remains to be seen when it will officially launch, and whether it will be able to compete with tools already popular with users, such as ChatGPT.
