Android Automotive steps up its game on big screens

While attention has recently focused on the integration of Gemini into Android Auto, the latest Google I/O conference was the opportunity to present a new feature of Android Automotive: the upcoming arrival of an expanded catalog of applications better suited to large screens in vehicles.

Android Automotive adapts to XXL car screens

Google wants to improve the user experience on XXL dashboards. For vehicles that natively integrate Android 14, the Mountain View firm is working on better compatibility with existing mobile applications, so that they can be displayed correctly in vehicles with large screens.

The new feature also includes a display ratio management menu, inspired by the one introduced on smartphones with Android 14 QPR1. This menu will allow you to switch between a default view and a full-screen display, depending on the driver's preferences or the constraints of the on-board interface.

The Volvo EX90 will be the first to benefit

Volvo models integrating Android Automotive will benefit first from these new features, starting with the all-new Volvo EX90. The Swedish manufacturer has been chosen as a development partner by Google to test and refine these software optimizations.

In addition to being the first to integrate Gemini, Volvo will have access to this expanded catalog of applications adapted to the on-board screens before others. The ultimate goal is to offer thousands of apps optimized for the car, with a consistent user experience, regardless of screen size.
