TotalEnergies has just officially announced its largest solar panel installation in Europe near Seville, Spain, where more than 400,000 solar panels form a farm capable, according to the French company, of producing the energy needed to power 150,000 homes. The cumulative capacity of this new park is 263 megawatts (MW), enough to produce 515 gigawatt hours of green electricity per year.
To promote this new farm, called the Guillena plant, TotalEnergies highlighted savings of 245,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. A "strategic interest" for Andalusia, the regional government had described. Spain has set itself the goal of achieving 80% renewable energy by 2030. At the same time, 800 direct and indirect jobs have been created with the opening of this new farm.
TotalEnergies is currently the fourth largest electricity supplier in Spain. Its number of customers has exceeded 2 million, including residential and business customers. The Guillena plant will not be the only one to be built under the aegis of the French company, which has also invested in 48 other projects since receiving the green light in 2023. The farms will be located in the regions of Madrid, Murcia, Castile-La Mancha, and Aragon.
This will bring the total capacity of solar projects to 3 gigawatts (GW). In the Madrid region alone, the capacity is expected to reach 1.9 GW.
