Avengers Endgame: Scarlett Johansson rants against the Oscars

In 2019, after the theatrical release of Avengers Endgame, Disney sent the Academy nomination requests in various categories, with only one statuette at stake: the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Six years later, you might think that a lot of water has flowed under the bridge, but some Marvel film actors continue to be annoyed by the profession's snobbery. In an interview with Vanity France, Scarlett Johansson, the actress who played Black Widow for a decade, attacks the Academy for not rewarding Avengers Endgame.

How come this film wasn't nominated for an Oscar? It's an impossible movie that shouldn't have worked, but it actually works as a movie - and it's also one of the most successful movies of all time.

Did Avengers Endgame deserve an Oscar?

According to Scarlett Johansson, Avengers Endgame should have won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2020. As a reminder, that year, the statuette went to Parasite, the film by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho. This decision is hardly surprising, as blockbusters or blockbuster films are rarely rewarded by the Academy, with the notable exception of masterpieces like The Lord of the Rings. Add to this the explicit dislike of many famous directors for the MCU, such as Martin Scorsese, who has never hidden his contempt for superhero films, as well as the great tradition of the Oscars of rewarding "niche" arthouse films, and you will have the explanations for this snobbery. However, Scarlett Johansson takes her job seriously and believes that "the commercial viability of a film should not harm its reputation", and that is to her credit!
