Final Destination: We ranked the 10 best deaths

Final Destination: We ranked the 10 best deaths

To mark the release of Final Destination Bloodlines, the sixth installment in the franchise, we decided to take a look back at the 10 most memorable deaths in the saga. As a reminder, this cult franchise has been a favorite with horror movie fans since the early 2000s. Here are our 10 favorite deaths in the Final Destination saga.

Final Destination: We ranked the 10 best deaths

10) The bathtub in The Final Destination

Final Destination: We ranked the 10 best deaths

This is clearly not the best installment in the saga. But this fourth Final Destination has the merit of offering funny, almost parodic and comical deaths, like the death of Cowboy (Jackson Walker). The latter is recovering in the hospital when a bathtub literally falls on him. An unusual, improbable and above all humorous death. In any case, it's a death striking enough to be mentioned.

9) Sucked into the pool in The Final Destination

When we tell you that Final Destination 4 is the most cheesy of the franchise, it's not for nothing. The proof is with this totally what the fuck death. Hunt Wynorski, who is swimming peacefully in a public pool, has his butt sucked out of a hole at the bottom of the water. A childish anguish that takes on quite funny, corny proportions, leading to a particularly abundant explosion of blood. It's very stupid, but also very funny for fans of second degree.

8) Head in the engine in Final Destination 3

Final Destination: We ranked the 10 best deaths

One of the strengths of the Final Destination saga is to stage totally improbable chain reactions. The proof is in this lunar and ultra-well-executed sequence in Final Destination 3. Where does the butterfly effect take on its full meaning? A segment that begins with the fall of a simple key, until the death of poor Anic, slashed by the propellers of an engine.

7) Eye surgery in Final Destination 5

This sequence is particularly successful because it plays on our real fears. After all, eye surgery is still a hell of a lot of stress. And since we're in Final Destination, we know things are going to go badly. Director Steven Quale begins his sequence with a form of anxiety-inducing realism: a distracted doctor, a malfunctioning machine, a tied-up character who can't escape, etc. Then, the sequence goes completely nuts when our heroine tries to escape death, before being thrown out of a window and landing in a thousand pieces a few floors below... A clever and funny scene, which plays with the audience's anxiety and pays homage to A Clockwork Orange in the process.

6) The elevator in Final Destination 2

Nora Carpenter, devastated by the death of her son at the dentist, enters an elevator. She crosses paths with an old man carrying a box of dentures. The phone rings, Nora's hair gets tangled in a hook, and the young woman ends up with her head cut off by the elevator doors. A classic but devilishly effective death that obviously pays homage to The Elevator.

5) The gymnast in Final Destination 5

How can you use a very simple premise to create total chaos? In this scene, Steven Quale has fun playing on the tension of his space. The spectators follow a gymnast doing her exercises on a beam. A close-up indicates the presence of a nail. Steven Quale then delights in ratcheting up the tension by showing the athlete unknowingly avoiding this rusty nail. Obviously, things will escalate when she steps on it...

4) Crushed by a window in Final Destination 2

A fairly ordinary construction accident, but incredibly violent. This sums up the death of Tim Carpenter in Final Destination 2. While the young boy emerges safe and sound from a dental appointment, he is quickly and without further ado killed by a window falling out of nowhere. David R. Ellis has fun building up the tension during a medical sequence, only to end up bringing the danger in a completely different way. A way to trap the audience, who expect the young man to die at the dentist's. Then, this fall, this silence, this violence... Crazy!

3) The plane explosion in Final Destination

It's clearly not the most impressive death in the franchise, but it all started with this plane crash. It's the inaugural sequence of the saga. As he prepares to board the plane for Paris, Alex, the protagonist, has a vision. His plane is going to explode in mid-flight, killing all the passengers. He then decides to follow his instincts and gets off the plane with a few other superstitious people. An unexpected, shocking sequence that sets the tone for the Final Destination saga. Except that no one can fool death...

2) Too much tanning in Final Destination 3

This is where we enter the cult sequences of the saga. Remember, in Final Destination 3, Chelan Simmons and Crystal Lowe go to the tanning salon. With this scene, James Wong has fun twisting the codes of horror. He features two busty bimbos, just to excite prepubescent teenagers looking for some physiques to drool over. Except that the beautiful Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie will have a rather unsavory fate. Locked in their tanning booth, the two women will be burned alive before literally catching fire. It's funny, violent, and can be seen as a direct criticism of the cult of the body and the representation of women in American horror films.

1) The highway in Final Destination 2

This is undoubtedly the most iconic sequence of the entire saga. How can we forget this totally mind-blowing scene on a section of highway? How can we not be trapped by the tension that sets in at the opening of the second film in the saga? David R. Ellis takes the time to insinuate his atmosphere, his tension, before an explosion of particularly deadly violence. Admit that since Final Destination 2, we no longer appreciate driving behind a truck transporting tree trunks... A general and international trauma almost as impactful as the shark in Jaws.
