Ahead of the Borderlands 4 release, which was brought forward 11 days from the schedule, arriving on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series on September 12, 2025, instead of September 23, 2025, thus leaving the field open for Bungie to release Marathon, the new installment in Gearbox's iconic looter shooter franchise was given a dedicated State of Play with Creative Director Graeme Timmins. We were able to learn more about its story, the Vault Hunters we'll be able to play as, and of course, see more of the game in action on PS5 Pro. And the least we can say is that it's pretty Brutasse!
Douche de lore et d'infos pour Borderlands 4
For about twenty minutes, the State of Play dedicated to Borderlands 4 promised us "missions, devastating weapons, action skills that blow your mind, characters who make a resounding return, and much more." And we were well served on all these points. Starting with more details on the synopsis of the direct sequel to Borderlands 3, with naturally new Vault Hunters to embody to discover all this, and their respective skills.
Borderlands 4 thus places part of its plot in Kairos, a planet dominated by the Guardian of Time. Strange events have been brewing there since Elpis, Pandora's moon, arrived in its orbit following Lilith's actions at the end of the third installment. It is now up to our four new Vault Hunters to lead the investigation. Entering the scene in this State of Play:
- Vex, the Siren of this fourth episode, who uses Phase energy to wreak havoc in her path by becoming more powerful or to summon equally deadly minions
- Rafa, a soldier wearing an experimental exosuit who can summon an entire arsenal to adapt to any situation, both at range and in close combat
We will of course find in Borderlands 4 old characters from previous installments, like Moxxie, Zane, Amara, and of course Claptrap, who will help us in our mission. Once again, we will be able to fully customize our Hunter, from their appearance to their skills, with different talent trees and passives to match everyone's playstyle.
Full-motion co-op gameplay on PS5 Pro
In addition to the story and the Vault Hunters that we will be able to play as in Borderlands 4, we naturally have the right to a detailed presentation of the gameplay of this new opus via a mission carried out in co-op (which will also support cross-play, and even split screen, with what's more a separate loot for each player!) all recorded on PS5 Pro. Right off the bat, we notice that the title offers new techniques for moving, such as gliding in the air, throwing a grappling hook at attachment points, dashing, and many others. Of course, vehicles will also be making a comeback.
The action in Borderlands 4 is thus even more dynamic than in previous installments, without forgetting the most important part of this new installment of the franchise: guns. Once again, depending on the manufacturer (Jakobs, Maliwan, and others), our weapons will have radically different behaviors and unique effects, in addition to taking different forms such as the pistol, the shotgun, the sniper rifle, etc.
At this level, Borderlands 4 offers a huge new feature to create even more deadly weapons that match your playstyle, with different accessories that you can pick from several manufacturers, to get truly tailor-made guns. Note that Gearbox has also revised its loot system, in order to make legendaries truly rare and even more unique than before. Likewise, we will be able to restart various missions at will, instead of having to reload a save to farm a particular boss. We even got a sneak peek at one of them before the State of Play ended.
Anyway, this is a very promising preview of what to expect when Borderlands 4 releases on September 12, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series!
