Borderlands 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the year, despite Borderlands 3 being criticized by players. Gearbox Software, the long-standing developer of the series, and Take-Two decided to announce the FPS's launch date particularly early. Borderlands 4 is scheduled for release on September 23, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.
Or rather, "was." Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Software, has just announced the new release date for Borderlands 4. Claptrap fans can rest assured: for once, it's not a delay.
Borderlands 4 release date moved up to September 12, 2025
Randy Pitchford posted a very important message on his X account on April 29. The Gearbox co-founder intentionally raises the alarm at the beginning of his video by stating that he has to share some news regarding the release date of Borderlands 4.
"The team is working really hard, everything is going really well. The game is amazing. So we are changing the launch date of Borderlands 4. The release date is now set for September 12th." It never happens, but you will get Borderlands 4 sooner than expected," Randy Pitchford finally rejoices.
This news is particularly well received by players eager to discover the crazy action of this new installment. Randy Pitchford's justification for this new release date is particularly clear: development is going very well, Borderlands 4 can therefore be launched sooner than expected.
Some players see something completely different in this decision: the desire of Take-Two (parent company of publisher 2K Games) to make room in the calendar for a certain GTA 6, expected next fall.
Randy Pitchford, well aware of the parallel debate swelling on social networks, spoke out on the subject. "The early release of Borderlands 4 is 100% the result of confidence in the game and in the development trajectory […]. Our decision is literally irrelevant to the actual or theoretical launch date of any other product," he wrote on X.
It's up to everyone to believe these words or not. The announcement of the official release date of GTA 6 will indicate whether Gearbox's game has truly paid the price for the anticipation generated by Rockstar's title. Remember that a State of Play dedicated exclusively to Borderlands 4 will be broadcast this April 30 at 11 p.m.
The big bad of this opus is called the Timekeeper, a dictator without faith or law. The four new Vault Hunters are expected to be featured extensively during this twenty-minute presentation.
