Recently, Shuhei Yoshida, a former PlayStation employee, essentially stated that gamers shouldn't complain about the price increases of games. Along the same lines, this time it's Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford who made a similar statement regarding the price of Borderlands 4, coming September 12, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series, at a suggested retail price that many fear will be set at 90 euros. But his somewhat clumsy choice of words in the face of these concerns has provoked a real outcry from gamers.
A potentially not-fantastic price for Borderlands 4
When the Switch 2 was announced, Nintendo opened Pandora's box by announcing a physical version of Mario Kart World for 90 euros. A price that the head of the American branch of Big N justified as being "studied according to the scale of a game and the work done on it." Since then, many publishers have been considering increasing the prices of their games. Borderlands 4, published by 2K Games, could be one of them, and this greatly worries fans.
One of them even posted a message to this effect on X.com to Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox. "Randy, Borderlands 4 has no interest in costing 80 dollars/90 euros. Don't take that risk, it will drive away a lot of players and fuel the trend of constantly increasing game prices." To which the man replied: "First of all, it's not my responsibility. Secondly, if you're a true fan, you'll find a way to buy it. In 1991, I bought Starflight for the Sega Genesis for $80 in a store near my house, while I was in college and earning a pittance selling ice cream. And I was still able to buy it.."
A response that clearly did not please the players. "Probably the worst response from a CEO I have ever seen", "I hope the AAA industry collapses, such a response is unacceptable", can indeed be read under the response of the Gearbox boss. Note, however, that we do not yet know for sure what the price of Borderlands 4 will be. To be sure, we will have to wait for an official announcement in this regard, crossing our fingers for a decent price, both for Borderlands 4 and other major upcoming titles.
