It's a small revolution in our digital habits: we can now talk to ChatGPT and Perplexity directly from WhatsApp, without creating an account or installing a new application. After Meta AI, which recently established itself via a fixed button in the interface, two other artificial intelligence giants have come to occupy the most used messaging service in the world.
Three brains in one app
On the OpenAI side, access to ChatGPT is via a simple contact to add: +1 (800) 242-8478. The same principle applies to Perplexity, the AI-powered response engine that can be reached at +1 (833) 436-3285. Once the number is registered, the conversation works like with any other contact, but the responses come from an algorithmic assistant.
With Perplexity, users can ask questions, get sourced answers, summarize texts, or even generate images from photos. The same goes for ChatGPT. But this integration into WhatsApp is not without its questions.
Meta AI, already present in the form of a permanent button—impossible to hide—has sometimes been triggered by mistake, which annoys some users. Perplexity, for its part, has been the subject of criticism since its CEO mentioned, in TechCrunch, a future browser designed to collect personal data... and monetize it. This direction could put off those who use WhatsApp for private or professional exchanges.
Accessibility, on the other hand, is definitely there: the AI slips into your pocket, in a familiar, frictionless interface. Whether it's to get an article summary, find a gift idea, or generate an image in seconds, chatbots are becoming conversational companions at your fingertips.
WhatsApp is thus becoming a small hub for artificial intelligence. Meta is banking on native integration, OpenAI on the reliability of ChatGPT, and Perplexity on the richness of its sources. While everyone makes their own promises, they all agree on one thing: AI must become as natural to use as any messaging service.
ChatGPT also offers a new shopping function in its web version: it can now compare products, display visuals, recommend items and include direct purchase links. These new features are available in GPT-4o, including for free accounts.
OpenAI also promises transparent memory management—the feature that allows AI to remember the context of exchanges—with control and erasure options. This feature will soon be linked to search and the new shopping experience, but for now it remains reserved for Plus and Pro subscribers, outside of Europe.
