Two months before the release of Superman, director and screenwriter James Gunn has given some clues about his next film for DC Comics. We'll tell you everything!
After Superman, James Gunn is not idle
On July 9, 2025, DC Comics fans will finally be able to discover Superman, the first film in the DCU developed by James Gunn. Appointed in 2022 as chief creative officer of DC Studios by Warner Bros., the director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy has the delicate task of building a shared cinematic universe capable of competing with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Launching in December 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos, this DCU is full of promise. After unveiling the trailer for season 2 of Peacemaker the day before yesterday, expected on the Max platform from August 23, 2025, James Gunn gave a brief update on the various DC projects.
On the social network Threads, on which he is very active, James Gunn answered the many questions from his fans regarding the future of the DCU. This was an opportunity for him to explain that he was currently working on the final VFX and sound mixing for Superman. While filming for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Craig Gillepsie officially ended on Saturday, May 10, James Gunn is also working on his next feature film as director and screenwriter. When asked about the nature of the project, he stated that the film in question had never been announced yet. At this point, the film is in "pre-writing."
Of course, the mystery surrounding this new DC film written and directed by James Gunn remains intact. While director Andrés Muschietti (It, Welcome to Derry) is currently working on the film Batman: The Brave and The Bold - inspired by Grant Morrison's cult comic - James Gunn could well develop a new team-based film, as he previously did with Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. While the possibility of a new Suicide Squad film could obviously be considered, other projects could suit the filmmaker's tastes. We're thinking in particular of a Justice League International film that's less dark than Zack Snyder's Justice League, or even a feature film centered on the Teen Titans. Finally, a project exploring the friendly relationship tinged with rivalry between Batman and Superman.
In any case, we can't wait to find out what James Gunn's next project will be. And to discover all the superhero movies scheduled until December 2027, click here.
