Since Google rolled out the May Android update to Pixel smartphones, many users have been experiencing significant battery issues. If it's not too late, don't install the patch.
Android updates follow one another and are all similar. Or almost. Just like Microsoft with Windows, Google offers monthly patches primarily focused on smartphone security. In the vast majority of cases, they address vulnerabilities and fix a few more or less annoying bugs. The May patch is no exception. Deployed on the Pixel 6 to 9 and their variants, it addresses 28 flaws and 3 bugs exactly. Nothing worth talking about in theory, but not this time.
Just visit the social network Reddit or the official Google forums, among others, to see the extent of the damage. The title of a thread opened on May 17th couldn't be more explicit: “Overheating and battery drain after May update on Pixel 9 Pro.” These two issues have been experienced by many Pixel phone owners since installing the latest Android patch.
Pixel battery crashes after May Android update, best avoided
One user says, “I bought a Pixel 9 in April and was really happy with the battery life. After the May update, the battery went to shit.” Another explains that his phone “constantly overheats and the battery drains massively.” For the unlucky ones, charging stops working altogether.
It seems that certain apps are making the situation worse, Instagram in particular. Browsing the social network makes the battery melt like snow in the sun, according to reports. This isn't the only explanation, as the same thing is being observed among people who don't use apps of this type.
Given the influx of feedback, we hope that Google will react quickly to correct the situation. In recent months, battery problems have been very prevalent on Pixel. Between the Pixel 4a being rendered almost unusable after a mysterious update and the limited charging speed on all models in the range, there's plenty to complain about.
