Elden Ring Movie Finds Studio and Director: Disaster Ahead?

Elden Ring Movie Finds Studio and Director: Disaster Ahead?

Is 2022's Game of the Year poised to become the best video game adaptation for the big screen? Although it's still too early to ask this question: the feature film project Elden Ring is now official and begins its journey with great promise. The announcement shared by Bandai Namco last night reveals that the studio A24 will be in charge of the production, with filmmaker Alex Garland directing.

The production company known for its independent films continues to gain momentum with its most recent successes – Everyting Everywhere all at Once, Past Lives or even The Brutalist to name a few – and manages to secure the rights to a video game franchise that the whole of Hollywood must have wanted to snap up.

And if the name Alex Garland doesn't mean anything to you, know that his profile seems perfectly suited to this colossal task entrusted to him. Garland has previously worked with A24 on numerous acclaimed feature films – Ex Machina, Men, Civil War, and Warfare – but is also no stranger to the video game industry. Garland has already lent his screenwriting talents to projects such as the 2013 reboot of Devil May Cry. The director has yet to comment on the announcement, but Bandai Namco is already excited to work with him and A24 to present Elden Ring in a new light: “We are delighted to announce that Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and A24 are teaming up with writer and director Alex Garland to bring FromSoftware Inc.’s popular video game Elden Ring to life under the in the form of a live-action film. We are really looking forward to bringing the world of ELDEN RING to fans in a new form, outside the confines of the game. Stay tuned. The journey has only just begun.”

The Elden Ring phenomenon continues unabated

A feature film is now on the horizon, but Elden Ring has not yet finished making a place for itself on gamers' consoles and PCs. On May 30, fans of the franchise will be able to discover Elden Ring Nightreign, a first multiplayer spin-off inviting the Shardless to cooperate to defeat super-powerful creatures. This title will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.

But FromSoftware does not forget that the Nintendo Switch 2 awaits gamers at the turn. The Kyoto-based company's new portable console will host Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition – a compilation of the original game and the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, among other additions and improvements – in the year 2025, without further details regarding the exact release date.
