FF9 Remake in Danger? Square Enix Reportedly Made Radical Decisions

FF9 Remake in Danger? Square Enix Reportedly Made Radical Decisions

In its latest financial report marking the end of its 2025 fiscal year, Square Enix released a lot of interesting information. We learned that its sales are reportedly declining, despite a deliberate multiplatform strategy. The Japanese giant has reportedly implemented a "three-year reboot plan" aimed at improving its long-term growth. This therefore implies radical measures and impacts many titles in development, including FF9 Remake.

FF9 Remake development impacted, but don't panic

As part of this famous reboot plan, we unfortunately shouldn't expect to see any major titles published by Square Enix released this year, or even before 2027-2028 at the earliest. The publisher wants to give developers the time they need to release major, memorable, and well-polished games. Among them, we can notably count Kingdom Hearts 4, FF7 Remake 3, and FF9 Remake, which interests us here. In this interval, only small Remakes or Remasters and smaller-scale games should be released, such as the series of HD-2D Remakes of the first two Dragon Quest games.

As a result, we also learn that Square Enix has canceled many titles in production to fit in with this new three-year growth plan. This includes the cancellation of the mobile game Kingdom Hearts, among other cancellations that are currently kept secret. According to APZonerunner on ResetEra, a colleague of VG247, we should not worry about the fate of FF9 Remake as one of the games affected by these cancellations.

Square Enix is clearly well aware of the aura surrounding the original ninth installment of its flagship franchise, and the enormous expectations the community has for its Remake. Unfortunately, this special status places it in the category of major titles affected by the three-year reboot plan. Therefore, we shouldn't expect to see FF9 Remake before 2027 or 2028, since Square Enix's 2028 fiscal year falls somewhere in between.
