Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Lost Soul Aside, PlayStation still has a few cards up its sleeve to keep gamers busy in 2025. And with summer approaching, many gamers are eagerly awaiting the many announcements that are expected to come at the annual Summer Games Fest Festival. But for the first time in 5 years, PlayStation will not be participating in the event.
Summer Games Fest 2025 is getting ready
Following the COVID pandemic and the cancellation of in-person events, E3 has had to evolve. More specifically, E3 succumbed to the pandemic, as video game publishers quickly acquired a taste for digital conferences and the savings made during this period. No need to deploy monstrous resources to broadcast 1 hour of trailers in a row when a pre-recorded video will suffice. From now on, it's Geoff Keighley and his Summer Games Fest who are leading the way, with a host of conferences here and there.
Xbox Games Showcase, PC Gaming Show, Future Games Show Summer Showcase, Wholesome Direct, Day of the Devs, Access-Ability Summer Showcase, Indie Quest, the conferences will multiply. But in 2025, one major industry player might not be there: PlayStation. Indeed, PlayStation has reportedly decided not to participate in the summer gaming season, historically reserved for E3 and Summer Game Fest.
PlayStation a notable absentee in summer 2025?
On the ResetEra forums, the usually well-informed John Harken responded to another user who was speculating that PlayStation might skip a showcase or State of Play this summer and save it for September. And in a simple but scathing response, Harken let out a rather witty "Indeed." According to some rumors that surfaced earlier this year, PlayStation would still hold a Showcase this summer, a presentation that remains different from the usual State of Play. However, it could also be that PlayStation completely skips this summer of 2025.
Its release schedule will still force PlayStation to share information about its upcoming exclusives. With the releases of Death Stranding 2 next June, and Ghost of Yotei in October, it's hard to see PlayStation not communicating around these big releases. However, PlayStation could take the opportunity to share new images of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog, and why not make the studio's second title in development official. PlayStation could also announce Phantom Blade Zero, Kingdom Hearts IV, Saros, and even, if we start to dream: Project Awakening.
