FSR4 Redstone: AMD to put even more AI into its scaling tool

AMD plans to release a major new version of its FSR technology – or FidelityFX Super Resolution for short – during the second half of the year. Currently known as FSR “Redstone, this evolution of the current FSR4 should introduce several new features mainly based on machine learning, in other words artificial intelligence; How to get even closer to what NVIDIA offers with its DLSS 4?

FSR will catch up with DLSS

The next version of FSR will, for example, offer an equivalent to NVIDIA's Neural Radiance Cache to predict and store indirect lighting in a scene, the goal being to reduce the computational load required for ray tracing without degrading the realism of the lighting. AMD will also add a specially trained neural network to FSR to improve and accelerate ray tracing while replacing traditional denoisers. Called Ray Generation, it is roughly equivalent to DLSS 3.5's Ray Reconstruction. Finally, a new AI image generation technique based on spatial and temporal data will be integrated.

Attractive on paper, this future major iteration of the FSR does, however, come with a major drawback: only the most recent Radeons based on the RDNA 4 architecture – the Radeon RX 9070/9070XT and Radeon RX 9060 XT – will be able to use these new techniques when this new version of FSR launches. However, AMD is definitely not ruling out the possibility of adding support for some of these features to Radeon devices of previous architectures in the future.
