There's no stopping Google, which is shaking up little habits. The web giant has changed its famous multicolored "G" logo, swapping flat colors for gradients. And the changes aren't just aesthetic. The search engine is currently testing a small revolution: replacing the famous "I'm Feeling Lucky" button with "AI Mode."
No luck for the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button
The "I'm Feeling Lucky" button is iconic at Google. Present since the beginning, it allows you to go to the first website suggested by the search engine for a given query. For example, a search for "Tim Cook" leads directly to the Apple CEO's Wikipedia page.
The idea, when Google launched, was to save time when internet connections were still expensive and slow and unreliable. The button is still present today, more like a relic of times gone by: now little used, it still retains its symbolic status, that of a signature recalling the playful spirit of Google... long since buried under tons of ads.
It is also significant that Google wants to replace this symbol from a lighter era with a button displaying results generated by AI. Because AI has become essential for the web giant, which sees the threat of AI bots growing: all of them have online search capabilities.
Eddy Cue, the head of Apple's services, recently testified to the decline in traditional online searches in Safari. Apple's browser will soon offer AI engines, in addition to traditional and Google engines. The latter has stepped up to defend its steak, but it is undeniable that ChatGPT, Perplexity and even Claude are nibbling away at market share.
This experiment will in any case allow Google to gauge the impact of this new button on the guinea pigs registered with Labs. This is an essential test for Google, which wants to offer its AI unparalleled exposure: that of its homepage. A space with an even higher value than in the results of a search, the famous (and sometimes hazy) AI Overviews.
