In addition to Max Payne 3, a port of GTA 4 is reportedly in development. This information should be taken with a grain of salt, but it sounds rather appealing on paper.

What if a port of GTA IV were to fill the gaps players are waiting for GTA VI? That's what Tez2, an influential insider within the gaming community, announced a few days ago. According to him, a port of the game is in development, and planned for this year on the latest generation consoles, namely the Xbox Series X/S and the PS5 (and perhaps also on Nintendo Switch 2 according to the insider).

However, Rockstar has never made any progress regarding such a project. Moreover, it is hard to imagine the studio focusing on anything other than its future behemoth. The idea remains that Rockstar could very well have delegated this port to an external studio, as was the case for Red Dead Redemption, allowing it to concentrate all its forces on GTA 6. After all, why not, Rockstar is not at its first attempt. In addition to Red Dead Redemption on PS4, Rockstar has already ported GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas under the compilation Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series XIS, PC and Nintendo Switch.

A former Rockstar technical director has enthused, stressing that the main character Niko Bellic is, in his opinion, the best protagonist of the saga. But GTA IV has several tricks up its sleeve, making it one of the best games in the franchise.

#3 The character, one of the most fleshed out in GTA

Niko Bellic is a main character who stands out from the crowd. Less flashy than Tommy Vercetti in Vice City (inspired by Tony Montana), less impulsive than Trevor Philips in GTA V, or less endearing than Carl CJ Johnson, the protagonist of San Andreas, Niko attracts with his story. A disillusioned Eastern European immigrant haunted by his pastwho dreams of living the American dream. Lured to Liberty City by his cousin Roman, but quickly becomes disillusioned when he sees Roman lying to him, and is drowning in debt. Niko is then drawn into a dark spiral that plunges him into all sorts of vices. Aware of the character's popularity, Rockstar integrated him into the DLCs The Ballad of Gay Tony, The Lost and Damned, and through a cameo on Michael's son's computer in GTA V. Through the tortured character of Niko Bellic, Rockstar depicts a darker and more mature adventure in its title released in 2008.

#2 Liberty City, an attractive map

Already used as a playground for players in GTA III, and then in the spin-off Liberty City Stories, the city of Liberty City, inspired by New York, offers a dark, rainy, dense atmosphere where each district (themselves inspired by those of the city New York) has its own identity.

A nice lick of paint would make the city even more realistic, densely populated, and with more detail, especially in the architecture. Why not also play on verticality with more accessible interiors?

#1 Welcome technical improvements

The advantage of porting a game to the latest generation consoles is, above all, the opportunity to correct the technical limitations suffered by the original game. Fixing certain bugs, switching to HD to refine the textures, revising the 3D models of NPCs and vehicles, or offering more dynamic lighting are options for making a quality copy. Be careful, however, not to repeat the mistakes of the past. The 2021 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition disaster is still fresh in everyone's memory, despite the studio gradually rolling out fixes.
