Rockstar Games has once again rocked the entire gaming world! After the rather expected announcement of a delay to next year for GTA 6, the studio blew the lid off the game by releasing the game's new trailer without warning last week. It has thus confirmed once again the chosen release date, this time with precision. However, can we be so sure that this new installment will be released on the scheduled date? There is room for doubt.
Will GTA 6 be on time in 2026?
The excitement is obviously at its peak with the new announcements surrounding GTA 6. The second trailer this time focuses on Jason, the male protagonist who will appear alongside Lucia. However, a ton of other information has also been released. We've learned more about some characters and iconic locations, but there's still work to be done on Rockstar's end before we can get our hands on it. For now, the date is set for May 26, 2026.
However, those who have followed Rockstar Games for a long time know that delays are commonplace. It must be said that with large-scale games, with all the ambitions that entails, it's no surprise that projects fall behind schedule. Before GTA 6, the most recent example is obviously Red Dead Redemption 2. Initially scheduled for 2017, the prequel to the adventures of John Marston—which themselves had been delayed from 2009 to 2010—was rescheduled twice. It was initially expected for spring 2018, before arriving in October of this year.
But Rockstar's western franchise is far from being an isolated case. Grand Theft Auto 5 was delayed up to three times between the second quarter of 2013 and April 2015. Similarly, fans of the studio had to wait a long time for L.A. Noire. The detective game was originally targeted for fiscal year 2008, only to be released in 2011. While we're on the subject of the City of Angels, let's also remember that Midnight Club Los Angeles was delayed from early to late 2008. This isn't very reassuring for GTA 6.
But Rockstar leaves nothing to chance
Some details can give us a little more confidence all the same. First, the fact that Rockstar is looking ahead a little over a year, which leaves more room for maneuver. Even more, the studio seems very confident in its communication. Instead of a new release window, it gives a specific date for the release of GTA 6, clearly displayed on the artwork and the official website.
Finally, note that this date of May 26 would not have been chosen out of thin air. If we keep in mind that the story of GTA 6 would be inspired, in very broad outline, by the criminal couple formed by Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, we can understand this choice. In fact, if we refer to the book Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde by Jeff Guinn, then we learn that Bonnie was buried on May 26, 1934. The coincidence seems too big for Rockstar not to have set this date at random. Therefore, everything suggests that the studio will ensure to stay faithful to its announcement.
