GTA 6: It's official, the map will be simply huge

While GTA 6 won't be released until 2026, Rockstar Games continues to up the ante. After a notable second trailer and an avalanche of screenshots, the studio has just released new official details about the game's map on the studio's website. And the least we can say is that the ambitions are living up to expectations: GTA 6 will feature the biggest map ever designed by Rockstar.

An even bigger world for GTA 6

Since its inception, Rockstar has built a solid reputation for its rich and believable open worlds. Red Dead Redemption 2 had already set the bar very high with a vast, vibrant, and incredibly varied world. But GTA 6 seems to want to go even further. According to information posted on Rockstar's official website, the GTA 6 map will include six major areas, each with its own unique environment, atmosphere, and activities.

Here are the areas already confirmed:

  • Vice City, the famous Miami-inspired metropolis
  • Leonida Keys, a coastal archipelago
  • Grassrivers, a more rural and swampy area
  • Port Gelhorn, an industrial and port area
  • Ambrosia, a secondary city with a different charm
  • And Mount Kalaga National Park, for nature lovers

A mix of urban jungle, wilderness, and rural areas that promises a real diversity of landscapes and gameplay. Yes, Vice City is back, as expected. But contrary to what one might have imagined, it will be only part of the GTA 6 playground. Rockstar is taking a broader approach here, setting the story in the fictional state of Leonida (inspired by Florida), with a map that extends well beyond the main city.

A map designed to evolve over time

Which What's particularly interesting is that Rockstar reportedly plans to add new areas after the game's release, likely in connection with GTA Online. A persistent rumor even suggested the inclusion of Cuba at one point during development, with cross-country smuggling missions. While this idea has reportedly been scrapped, it demonstrates the overall ambition of the GTA 6 project. This evolutionary model is reminiscent of GTA Online, which has grown year after year. And it seems GTA 6 will follow a similar trajectory, with a living world that's set to expand and transform over the long term. Of course, bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. But Rockstar has proven in the past that it knows how to avoid empty, repetitive worlds. The interest here will be to see how the developers manage to intelligently fill this gigantic map, with varied content, rhythm and life.

Especially since the presence of very contrasting locations in GTA 6, between nature, cities, beaches, marshes, ports or suburbs, allows us to imagine a real wealth of activities. Chases in the city, treasure hunts in the forest, trafficking at sea or infiltration in warehouses... everything seems possible.
