Internet security is a very important point, especially for all users. However, passwords are sometimes insecure, or even compromised.
So, if you connect to any website and Google Chrome, which risks being bought by OpenAI, considers that your code is too weak, it will offer to change it. All this, with a solid alternative, in a single click.
A new feature to improve your password
This new feature is implemented in parallel with Google's Password Manager, which has the function of saving and entering your login details on different sites. And since 2019, this service has offered a verification tool that alerts you if your code is the victim of data theft.
So, when this is the case, you must change your entire password to secure your account. However, this process is often tedious and few people take the time to do it correctly.
As a result, Google has developed a feature that was presented at the I/O developer conference this week and that brings you various benefits as Paul Kinlan, Chrome Developer Relations Manager, explains: “When Chrome detects that a password has been compromised, the user receives a suggestion to change it and, with Chrome's permission, automatically updates the password goes on the site, behind the scenes”.
A gradual implementation of this Google feature
While this new feature promises to ensure user security, but also to eliminate several problems related to password management, Google has announced that its implementation will take some time. Indeed, Paul Kinlan adds the following: “We will start with a subset of websites in 2025. And we will expand this functionality to more websites in the future.”
In other words, only a few websites will be affected by this measure. But if you want to make sure it's applied to your properties, two methods are available to you.
The first is to use autocomplete="current-password" and autocomplete="new-password" to have it automatically filled in and saved. For the second, you'll need to configure a redirect from /.well-known/change-password to the password change form for the site in question.
Furthermore, today, most small businesses use access keys, which provide significant security to protect users. And earlier this month, Google announced that this feature would be the default method for creating new customer accounts.
