Heatwave, thunderstorms: here are the 2 French regions at risk this weekend

After a warm and sunny May 1st weekend, France is preparing to experience a May 8th weekend marked by a significant rise in temperatures. This is particularly the case in the southwest and center of the country, according to forecasts from Météo France relayed by France Bleu.

More than 25 degrees

After a rather cool and unstable week, the mercury will rise from Friday with values that could reach 21 degrees in Paris and 22 degrees in Cognac, explain weather specialists. The heat threshold, which is set at 25 degrees, could even be crossed on Saturday in Aquitaine despite a stormy context across a large part of the Atlantic coast.

Meteorologists at Météo France are predicting “conditions conducive to thunderstorms” for Saturday, linked to a low-pressure system and cold air at altitude. These storms are expected to affect the Atlantic coast, stretching from the tip of Finistère to the Basque Country, and extending as far as Limousin.

Despite this instability, mild weather, even heat, will dominate in many regions of the Southwest. France Bleu reminds us that “the heat threshold, that is to say 25 degrees, could be reached on Saturday in Aquitaine despite the thunderstorms.” This phenomenon is not unprecedented this year since in Bordeaux, this threshold had already been crossed as early as Thursday, April 8.

Sun in the Northeast

The contrast will be marked with the northeastern quarter of the country, which will benefit from largely sunny weather throughout the weekend. The northern and eastern regions will be spared from the showers and will enjoy generous sunshine (especially on Sunday), while thunderstorms will become “more frequent in the west and southwest of the country,” emphasizes Météo France. The areas that stretch from Brittany to Aquitaine and as far as the Pyrenees will also be exposed to thunderstorms. On the other hand, "the sun reserves its favors for the northern and eastern regions", insist the forecasters quoted by our colleagues.
