Netflix's adaptation of the Gears of War video game series isn't dead. The streaming service has found a director to direct the film, which was first announced in 2022.
It's been three years since Netflix acquired the rights to the Gears of War license, the famous video game series, with the ambition of making a film and then an animated series. Or even longer if it's a success. Since then, the project seems to have been abandoned, as there has been extremely little, if any, news about it. We've known from the start that the streaming platform has partnered with The Coalition, the studio in charge of the franchise since its fourth installment, and that's about it.
The film must feature real actors and actresses. Finding a suitable cast is a major challenge for any video game adaptation, and for the moment, no names have been mentioned. In the meantime, The Hollywood Reporter tells us that the upcoming Gears of War feature film has a director. It took almost 3 years to find him, but it seems to be done: Netflix has chosen to trust David Leitch.
Netflix finally has a director for its film adapted from the Gears of War video games
The man began his career in film as a stuntman, before gradually moving away from the spotlight to move behind the camera. As a director, he has an eclectic filmography, ranging from action films like John Wick and Deadpool 2 to the thriller Bullet Train with Brad Pitt. His latest work is The Fall Guy in 2024, with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in the lead roles.

The storyline for the Gears of War adaptation is not yet known. Remember that the game takes place on a planet suddenly threatened by creatures emerging from the earth, the Locust. Led by Marcus Fenix, a disgraced sergeant, a team is then tasked with saving the world. Barring any surprises, we should find this basic framework in the film.
