The invitation is out: "The world is vast and shows the extraordinary. On May 19 at 2:30 p.m., the launch conference for the new Nova 14 series products and HarmonyOS computers, HarmonyOSComputer, invites you to start a new chapter together." These words, accompanied by a teaser image revealing a laptop with clean lines and notable thinness, with a distinctive pattern on the hinge reminiscent of its Mate XT folding smartphone, leave little room for doubt. Huawei seems ready to shake up the market for PCs with a foldable screen.
A jewel of foldable technology?
The rumors that have been circulating for months seem to be confirmed. This new entrant in Huawei's prestigious Ultimate Design range, known for its premium build quality and neat aesthetics, should therefore adopt a foldable format. Leaks on Weibo suggest a metal chassis and a hinge inspired by those of the brand's smartphones.
At the heart of this machine, we expect a major break with the native integration of HarmonyOS. This strategic choice would mark a bold transition, at least for the Chinese market, moving away from Windows and strengthening Huawei's self-developed software ecosystem, in a bid for technological independence from American technologies. This operating system, already used on the manufacturer's smartphones and tablets, will replace Windows 11. The device would support more than 2,000 applications, according to Chinese media outlet Nanfang Daily, cited by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
High-end specifications on the horizon
Not all the details are known yet, but indiscretions suggest promising features. The MateBook Fold Ultimate Design is said to feature a touchscreen, allowing it to transform into a tablet when folded. Under the hood, we're talking about a beefy configuration with 32GB of RAM and 2TB internal storage.
To power its laptop, Huawei is said to be using a new ARM processor, the Kirin X90, entirely designed and manufactured with Chinese components. The HPR-W72 model number is also circulating, and some are speculating about the addition of the "RS" label, synonymous with luxury at Huawei. While the foldable laptop market is still in its infancy, Huawei, with this MateBook Fold Ultimate Design, seems determined to establish itself as a major player, ready to compete with brands like Lenovo and Asus.
The date is therefore set for this Monday, May 19, and if Huawei will also present its new range of Nova 14 smartphones, there is no doubt that all eyes will be riveted on this ambitious technological bet.
