Netflix is serving up a K-pop Spider-Verse (and it looks crazy)

Next month, Netflix and Sony are preparing to dazzle us with an animated film so promising it deserves a proper theatrical release. Announced a few years ago, the new production from the studio behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs. the Machines finally has its release date. KPop Demon Hunters will hit the platform on June 20th, and it would be a shame to miss out simply because the title evokes Korean pop music. Even if you've never listened to Blackpink, Twice, or Le Sserafim, or the very idea of a boy band like BTS makes your hair stand on end, we promise you that this animated feature film is still worth your attention. If you don't believe us, we challenge you not to fall under the spell of its trailer:

Superstars by day, demon hunters by night

It only takes a few seconds to rediscover the captivating artistic direction that Sony Pictures Animation has accustomed us to in recent years. Lights, movements, facial expressions, sets... all the visual elements are heightened for a result that is more vibrant than ever. And what better way to showcase the studio's style than with an atypical group of pop stars? KPop Demon Hunters presents the story of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, three South Korean idols with busy double lives. When the trio isn't selling out stadiums across the globe, the three young women must don their secret identities as demon hunters to protect humanity.

But this time, their enemies of the night come to attack them on their own turf. When a new boy band begins destroying their reputation and stealing their fans, the heroines realize that these supermodel singers straight out of a teen magazine are anything but human. The demons have realized that they want to take advantage of the popularity of KPop to devour the souls of the crowds of spectators.

A soundtrack by K-pop stars

What would a K-pop-inspired animated film be without an original song composed to accompany it? Twice fans will be thrilled to hear that Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung perform “Takedown,” a new song that was already shared in the trailer. One thing’s for sure: this first glimpse of the film promises a soundtrack that lives up to the flamboyant visuals.
