Nintendo is improving your Switch with this major update, here's what's changing

Nintendo is offering a new update for your Switch (all variants). Firmware 20.1.0 arrives just a few weeks after version 20. It's primarily a patch, but installing it is important. The release notes list three improvements made by the firmware.

Nintendo seems particularly active at the moment as the Nintendo Switch 2's release draws ever closer. The console manufacturer had already launched the major Nintendo Switch System Update 20.0.0 on May 1st, which brought many new features announced alongside the new console's presentation – and a series of improvements that both distinguish and unify the two generations.

Dematerialized games, new ways to share your purchases, and the introduction of the GameShare sharing function via WiFi (from a Switch 2 to an older generation console, only) were undoubtedly the points that had the greatest impact on players, in addition to a general evolution of the interface.

What's new in firmware 20.1.0 for Nintendo Switch

Unfortunately, just a few hours after its deployment, many users reported the appearance of a strange code (2205-1015) preventing them from using the console. Nothing entirely surprising for a major release. Especially in the context of a Switch range that is, quite frankly, expanding. Players nevertheless appreciated the speed with which the manufacturer sent a patch and its communication with impacted customers. The software was available worldwide just a few hours after the first reports.

The newly released System Update 20.1.0 seems to be there mainly to iron out a few wrinkles in the interface. With the added bonus of more general improvements aimed at strengthening the system's stability and implementing likely patches that plug flaws discovered in the meantime. It's difficult to be precise on this matter given the company's lack of transparency on this front. Here are the three things that update 20.1.0 brings to older-gen consoles, according to the official patch notes:

  • Parental Controls settings have received visual improvements.
  • The sound that plays when Nintendo Switch Online is launched from the HOME Menu has been changed.
  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user experience.

Even though it may be minimal, it is still strongly recommended to install the update quickly. Applying it is still just as simple, even if it also means leaving the console alone for a few minutes.

How to install the update

Take your console and follow these steps:

  • Go to System Settings
  • Select Console Update to start the process.

To avoid an error, make sure your internet connection remains stable throughout the installation process.
