The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming this June 5, 2025, and the launch of a new console requires proper planning. In addition to ensuring several exclusive titles are available to accompany it, this also means backward compatibility for most games from the previous console. In this regard, the Japanese giant recently announced free updates for some of them, to ensure they benefit from the more powerful hardware of the new machine.
Preparing for the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2 via free updates
While a few hand-picked games such as Super Mario Jamboree or Tears of the Kingdom will receive a paid upgrade in the form of a special Nintendo Switch 2 "Enhanced" edition, other titles on its console, currently 12 in number, will also be entitled to a free update, as Nintendo recently announced.
In most cases, this will allow these titles to take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2's enhanced capabilities, with a higher resolution display in portable or docked mode, optimized frame rates, or even HDR support. Examples of this include big titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Purple, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Super Mario Odyssey, and Echoes of Wisdom.
For other multiplayer-oriented titles, the free Nintendo Switch 2 update will allow them to support GameChat features, one of the new console's major social features. Examples of this category include Club House Games: 51 Worldwide Classics.
So here is the newly announced list of games that will receive a free update related to the Nintendo Switch 2, which we will try to complete if the need arises and if Nintendo announces other titles concerned:
- ARMS
- Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
- Club House Games: 51 Worldwide Classics
- Game Builder Garage
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Pokémon Scarlet
- Pokémon Purple
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
- Super Mario Odyssey
- Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
- Zelda: Link's Awakening
