Here's some great news for animation fans. One of Cartoon Network's biggest hits is preparing to return to our screens, and it's already shaping up to be a great one. In the 2010s, the famous cartoon channel had a weakness for programs that were, to say the least,... strange. Between Adventure Time, Flapjack, and Regular Show, viewers were able to enjoy series that pushed their ideas to the limit, without fear of being too mature and scaring the younger audiences. But if there's one show whose humor has resonated with several generations, to the point of being regularly reposted on TikTok and other networks: it's The Amazing World of Gumball. It must be said that between its atypical artistic direction – a clever mix of many animation styles – and its no-holds-barred approach to subjects such as politics, mental health, or philosophy, all mixed with numerous references to pop culture, there is no other series like it.
So much so that its absence is starting to be felt. The final season now dates back to January 2018, with the exception of a few spin-off episodes released between 2019 and 2021. But Gumball and Darwin have not said their last word. While an animated feature film (once canceled, then finally postponed) is still in preparation, a seventh season is also on the way and will arrive in the coming months.
A sequel with the feel of a reboot
Cartoon Network is still keeping quiet about the release date of the new batch of episodes, but presents a promising first teaser. We've already learned that the show is changing its name: enough to make this seventh season a sort of reboot. The Amazing World of Gumball becomes The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball. This name change is certainly not insignificant and suggests that the series will emphasize even more its absurd and wacky humor. This is also the tone adopted by the mini-sketch of the trailer, faithful to the original program.
While the first seconds lead us to believe that the town of Elmore has transformed into a post-apocalyptic desert in the style of The Last of Us, it is simply full of dust after having been abandoned by the animators for so many years. What would Gumball be without a few meta jokes? Waking from their deep sleep, Gumball and Darwin realize they're late for school... and by a long way. Despite their seven-year absence, the duo decides to treat themselves to five extra minutes of sleep: should we take this detail as a clue regarding the release date? Those "five minutes" could well turn into five months for a release this October. More details should be coming soon.
