Nintendo Switch 2: you can play with any mouse

Nintendo Switch 2: you can play with any mouse

The Nintendo Switch 2, which will be launched on June 5th, includes a second USB-C port on its top edge. Like the Lenovo Legion Go or the ROG Ally X, this second port is clearly intended to make it easier to use accessories connected to the console. The Japanese manufacturer has made this clear, having launched an official Nintendo camera designed to be connected to the port.

But since the launch, one question remains: will we be able to connect the accessories of our choice to this port, and more importantly, will it work as intended? A third-party camera in the form of the character Planta Piranha does exist, but what about mice?

Third-party mouse support confirmed, but for only one game for now

As Engadget noted in the official presentation of the game Nobunaga’s Ambition, it will indeed be possible to connect a third-party mouse of your choice to play. As a reminder, the Switch 2 integrates optical sensors allowing the controllers to be used as mice. While we were pleasantly surprised when we first got our hands on the console, it could never compete with the comfort provided by a carefully chosen mouse.

In the clip in question, developer Michi Ryu states: "Once the USB mouse is connected, a message appears in the top left corner to indicate that the mouse is connected. When the USB mouse is connected, it takes priority over the Joy-Con 2. As you can see, you can switch instantly. It's very fluid."

But since the devil is in the details, this information does not allow us to conclude that it will be possible to do the same with all games. Indeed, based on the first Nintendo Switch, some games already supported a mouse, but they were only a handful. With the introduction of an official mouse mode, it's a safe bet that this number will explode.

This information gives hope that Nintendo is opening the floodgates of third-party accessories a little. For example, it would be in good taste to be able to connect any webcam to act as a camera in games that support such use. Nintendo has already confirmed that this would be possible, but without specifying the possible restrictions that webcams not designed for the console would be subject to. In any case, we can therefore confirm that you should wait a little before purchasing the official Nintendo camera. The official launch of the console should remove any last doubts.
