Long confined to vegetarians as an alternative to meat, tofu wants to restore its image, even among meat-based fans. Coming straight from the United Kingdom, the British giant The Tofoo Company is arriving in France with ambitions that match the 60% market share it already holds across the Channel.
Modernizing Tofu
Forget bland, rubbery tofu: The Tofoo Company wants to focus on deliciousness. Pre-pressed, ready-to-eat, designed for novices and those who refuse to spend more than 10 minutes in the kitchen, their tofu aims to appeal to both plant-based cuisine lovers and meat-lovers. An artisanal and uninhibited approach, but above all very urban, with smoked recipes, or infused with Sriracha sauce.
Is tofu really good for your health?
Rich in protein, low in saturated fat, and a source of iron and calcium, tofu ticks all the boxes for a balanced diet. According to the recommendations of the American Heart Association and the US Food and Drug Administration, consuming 25 grams of tofu per day would diversify your protein intake. However, from an environmental perspective, the situation is less glorious. The massive cultivation of soybeans, mainly dedicated to animal exploitation, weighs heavily on global agriculture. It is also regularly accused of giving pride of place to GMO crops.
In the United Kingdom, the arrival of The Tofoo Company revolutionized the market, multiplying tofu sales sevenfold between 2016 and 2024. The brand has become the second best-selling in the plant-based sector. Made from organic, non-GMO soy, nigari, and water, the brand is now setting out to conquer France with the same ambitions.
