Here's a surprise no one really saw coming. After more than two decades of chaotic development, Captain Blood, an action-adventure game inspired by the world of piracy, is finally available. And to mark the occasion, a free demo has just been released on the PlayStation Store, for both PS5 and PS4.
A project with a turbulent history for this PS5 game
Started in the early 2000s, Captain Blood has undergone a development that was as long as it was incredible. Initially planned for platforms that are now defunct, the game has changed hands, graphics engines, and even artistic direction over the years. Few titles can boast of having gone through more than 20 years of production before seeing the light of day. And yet, here it is at last. The full game was released this week on PS5 and other consoles, in a modernized and finalized version by Seawolf Studio and General Arcade, under the publishing house of SNEG.
To accompany this discreet but historic launch, the publisher is offering a free demo on PS5 and PS4, downloadable now. Good news: no PS Plus subscription is required, even for Premium users. Simply download it directly from the PS Store.
What is less clear, however, is the exact content of the PS5 demo. Its duration, playable portions, or the ability to transfer progress to the full version are not specified on the PS Store. A vagueness that might put some people off… but which costs nothing to test.
A return to the golden age of pirates
Captain Blood immerses players in the 17th-century Caribbean, in the midst of the golden age of piracy. You play as a feared pirate, embarking on a quest for treasure, sword fights, thundering cannons, and pistol duels. A classic, but effective program for anyone who dreams of chasing glory the old-fashioned way.
Visually, the PS5 game offers a rather raw, sometimes dated artistic direction, but which exudes a certain charm for fans of old-school atmospheres. Gameplay-wise, it's old-school hack-and-slash, with a mix of action, loot, and sea exploration.
In a market dominated by big blockbusters, the return of Captain Blood is like a UFO. Little communication, a discreet release, but a 22-year legacy that commands respect. Even if everything won't be perfect, the proposal is worth a look, if only for the crazy story behind it. And for the more curious, this free demo is the perfect opportunity to form an opinion without spending anything.
