Steam is giving away a new free game, but you won't want to play it

Steam is full of free games, but it's not always a good idea to jump right in without thinking. This new release is already causing controversy and receiving a large number of negative reviews. Clearly, it's perplexing. Here's some explanation.

A highly anticipated, but highly criticized adaptation on Steam

Launched on May 8, 2025, in early access on Steam, GeoGuessr Steam Edition probably didn't expect such a welcome. Just a few days after its release, the game already has an "extremely negative" rating on Valve's platform. A disappointment for this title, which has been popular on browsers for several years.

At first glance, the arrival of GeoGuessr on Steam was cause for excitement. The concept of guessing where you are in the world based on Street View images had already won over millions of online players. But this PC version quickly fell apart due to monetization choices deemed too aggressive. Contrary to what some hoped, purchasing the game on Steam does not give access to all features. The majority of modes, such as solo ranked duels, are locked behind annual or monthly subscriptions. The Steam Pass, the "Elite" subscription, or the "Unlimited" plan are required to access the full version, for a price of up to $29.99 per year.

A confusing and compartmentalized subscription system

Another downside is that the browser version's subscription isn't compatible with the platform version, unless you subscribe to one of the more expensive plans. This means that players sometimes have to pay twice to fully enjoy the game, depending on the platform used. The only consolation: GeoGuessr Steam Edition allows cross-play with the browser version. But that's clearly not enough to make the pill go down.

With over 3,000 reviews and only 16% positive feedback, the game has climbed to the top of the lowest-rated titles on Steam. Since the game is still in Early Access, some players are hoping for adjustments. But for now, frustration reigns, especially since this paid version feels like it's further fragmenting an experience that was once simple, free (in part), and very accessible.
