Samsung is preparing a surprising new feature for its smartwatches. The company is reportedly considering abandoning a long-awaited update. It is reportedly aiming for greater consistency between its devices.
Major brands often seek to align the evolution of their products for greater consistency. Samsung is no exception. Its smartphones and smartwatches run on similar systems, all based on Android. While One UI 7 has just arrived on Galaxy phones, Galaxy Watch users have naturally been waiting for the Watch version. But according to several sources, the brand could make an unexpected leap.
Samsung is reportedly considering jumping directly from One UI 6 Watch to One UI 8 Watch, without ever offering a version 7. This change is said to aim to harmonize the version numbers between the brand's smartphones and watches. The company is reportedly preparing the release of the eighth version, an update based on Android 16, expected in beta form next month. The final OS should then arrive at the end of the summer, which would quickly make version 7 obsolete on these devices.
Samsung would align One UI 8 Watch with its smartphones to launch the Galaxy Watch 8
This choice to skip a version would be a first for Galaxy watches. Currently, recent models use One UI 6 Watch, based on Wear OS 5. Samsung could have initially offered a version 7 based on Wear OS 5.1 and Android 15. But by favoring One UI 8 Watch this summer, the brand would offer an update directly in line with its future high-end smartphones, which will also receive Android 16 in the fall. This would allow the brand to ensure software consistency across its entire ecosystem, facilitating simultaneous updates between watches and phones.
One UI 8 Watch could be unveiled at the same time as the Galaxy Watch 8, scheduled for July. The update is expected to include a new design and health-related improvements. Samsung could also take advantage of this to integrate Wear OS 6, also based on Android 16. This would allow the next generation of smartwatches to be fully synchronized with Galaxy phones, both in terms of interface and functionality.
