Samsung's next high-end foldable smartphone promises to be bigger. But one key feature remains unchanged. And that might disappoint some consumers.
Every year, smartphone manufacturers focus on larger screens, sleeker designs, and improved performance. Folding models, in particular, aim to combine the power of a tablet with the compactness of a phone. But this rapid evolution often comes with unexpected compromises. Users expect constant progress, but some aspects seem frozen generation after generation.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7, expected this summer, will adopt slightly larger screens, both outside and inside. It is inspired by the design of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which was never released in many countries. But despite these hardware adjustments, Samsung will not change one crucial element: the size of the battery. The smartphone will retain a capacity of 4,400 mAh, identical to that used since the Galaxy Z Fold 3, through the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Z Fold 5 and more recently the Z Fold 6.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 keeps a 4,400 mAh battery despite its larger screens
For several years, Samsung has focused on software optimization and the efficiency of Snapdragon chips to improve battery life without increasing the size of the battery. These efforts help limit energy consumption. But in a folding device with two high-definition screens, including a large internal screen with a high refresh rate, the energy requirements remain significant. A 4,400 mAh battery seems increasingly limited to support intensive use. And this constraint becomes visible at the end of the day for many users.
The comparison with the brand's other models reinforces this observation. The Galaxy Z Flip 7, although much more compact, would be equipped with a 4,300 mAh battery. As for the Galaxy S Ultra series, it has used a 5,000 mAh battery for four generations, including on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. These models offer a battery life of up to two days. At the same time, the Fold remains limited by a slower charge and a reduced battery life, despite a higher price. For the seventh consecutive time, Samsung has not updated either the capacity or the charging speed, leaving many users wanting more.
