Despite the years, many Marvel characters continue to inspire their fans. Last year, fans of Deadpool and Wolverine were able to marvel at Shawn Levy's film Deadpool & Wolverine, conceived as a true tribute to the two mutants. On the Spider-Man side, it's the character of Gwen Stacy who recently received a major update, with Marvel granting her terrifying powers.
When Marvel gives Gwen Stacy terrifying powers
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe will soon enter its Phase VI with Fantastic Four: Beginning, Marvel continues to expand its universe through its comics. Adventures with smaller budgets mean more characters are involved. Some less popular characters are even being put in the spotlight, a boon for their fans. But Marvel is also multiplying new series, sometimes to bring back a character shelved for a while.
On May 14, Marvel fans welcomed with open arms the return of a relatively unknown character from the comics: Gwenpool. First appearing in 2015, Gwenpool follows the explosion of popularity of Spider-Gwen. Marvel therefore had fun offering variants of Gwen Stacy, as Doctor Strange, Wolverine, or even Groot. And one of her variants was Deadpool, offering a first design for Gwenpool. Merging two popular characters is not a risky choice for Marvel, but it hit the mark. In November 2015, Gwenpool officially appeared in a comic: Howard the Duck Vol. 6 #1, eventually republished as The Unbelievable Gwenpool #0.
A first solo series for Gwenpool, who would eventually return in West Coast Avengers Vol. 3 and then Spider-Man/Deadpool Vol. 9, before enjoying a second solo series with Gwenpool Strikes Back in 2019. Gwenpool's popularity has grown steadily over the years, so much so that the character returns even this year with Gwenpool, a series in which the Gwen Stacy of Earth-616 has been resurrected with abilities similar to those of Weapon X and calls herself "Gwenpool". But the real Gwen Poole must team up with Spider-Man (Peter Parker), Gwen Stacy's eternal love, in an unlikely adventure to try to discover who resurrected Gwen Stacy, and especially to learn the reasons that pushed her to wear a purple version of Poole's costume.
Gwenpool, Gwen Poole, Spider-Man, Fin Fang Foom, Hawkeye, Jeff the Land Shark, Marvel's elite are reunited for a new series by Cavan Scott, Stefano Nesi, and Chad Hardin. But Gwenpool, more destructive than ever, inherits a terrifying power here. Marvel teases us here that Gwen Stacy seems to share Gwenpool's ability to manipulate reality. This is part of the answer when Gwenpool uses her reality-distorting power for the first time to launch Fin Fang Foom into the stratosphere. Peter collapses in pain as his Spider-Sense screams at him that something is wrong.
And Peter does it again a little later by detecting Gwen's power to break the fourth wall and manipulate reality. While this first issue teases this power without ever confirming it, its synopsis leaves less room for speculation: "GWENPOOL IS BACK AND MORE DANGEROUS THAN EVER! Everyone's favorite reality-bender is about to change her life, getting darker... grittier... and bringing her own brand of hyper-violent justice to a battle-torn New York City! Who is this dark Gwenpool? And what does she have to do with the Spectacular Spider-Man? Starring: Fin Fang Foom AND Jeff the Land Shark - this story will shock you to the core!"
A Gwen Stacy returned from the dead for an obscure reason and with terrifying powers, the question remains as to what ends. The mysterious threat behind Gwenpool's return will undoubtedly be revealed in the coming issues, and it remains to be seen what readers will think of the future outcomes. The answer will be found next June with Gwenpool #2, when Gwen Stacy and Gwenpool will truly face off, according to the cover.
