In 2015, EA and DICE revived a cult franchise for many fans: Star Wars Battlefront. The first installment, while fun, suffered from many shortcomings upon its release, but it was so successful that a second game was released in 2017. Star Wars Battlefront 2 was bigger, more powerful, and more generous. Clearly, the multiplayer FPS had some very strong selling points, but unfortunately, it quickly stumbled upon itself by revealing downright pay-to-win game mechanics.
Unbearable, the studio had to revise its copy, which helped stem the bleeding. Even though many players had left the ship, Star Wars Battlefront 2 managed to survive and even improve significantly. Since then, thousands of players have remained on its servers, and recently, attendance has even exploded significantly, and a potential Star Wars Battlefront 3 is starting to make headlines.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a hit and even shatters records
Star Wars Battlefront 2 is once again a hit. Even more impressive, it has set a new attendance record, almost twice the maximum reached shortly after its release. On Sunday, May 25, more than 18,000 Steam players rushed to play the game. Why such enthusiasm now? It's hard to say. The excellent and extremely successful Andor series is certainly not unrelated to this resurgence in popularity, not to mention word of mouth, since yes, the game is very good now that there has been a lot of work done on it.
Since then, it is Star Wars Battlefront 3 that is now making waves on social media, so much so that it has finally reached the ears of developers who worked on the second episode. This is the case of Matt Holm who came to respond to fans on the forums by declaring that despite all this new hype around BF2, we shouldn't expect to see a Star Wars Battlefront 3 anytime soon: "I don't expect Battlefront 3 to be announced at the end of this period of strong resurgence of popularity [around BF2]" we can read on Reddit, and there are several reasons for this.
It's not tomorrow that we will see a sequel
First of all, most of the developers who worked on Star Wars Battlefront 2 have left the ship. The game is almost 10 years old now, and a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then. Secondly, until now, there hasn't really been any major enthusiasm to justify a return of the franchise, and it would take a lot more than that to start attracting EA's attention. Finally, DICE, which took care of the previous games, is extremely busy with the next Battlefield, on which EA seems to want to devote all its energy.
The game is in full intensive development and the testing phases are coming one after the other, not to mention that several studios have come to lend a hand on different game modes to ensure a XXL game at release. Suffice to say that all the staff are very busy on the license, so there is very little chance of seeing them suddenly disperse. So for the moment, there's no Star Wars Battlefront 3 on the program, but you can also (re)start Battlefront 2. The game is available on PC, but also on Xbox One and PS4. It is of course playable on Xbox Series and PS5.
