Switch 2: Can you connect a mouse to the console via USB? The answer is finally out

During the official announcement of the Switch 2, Nintendo presented a new mouse mode allowing the console's right Joy-Con to be used as a computer mouse. This feature should prove useful for certain types of games, particularly management and strategy games. But while it can be a good troubleshooting solution, the comfort and ergonomics over long gaming sessions are not expected to be very optimal. We were wondering if it would be possible to connect a real PC mouse to the Switch, and now we know the answer.

It's not Nintendo, but publisher Koei Tecmo who is communicating on this subject. The company published a video on YouTube to show what the gaming experience will be like for the Switch 2 port of its title Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening Complete Edition. It's precisely a strategy game, which would particularly benefit from the mouse.

The Switch 2 is compatible with wired mice

Michi Ryu, the game's producer, first activates mouse mode. Right and left clicks are possible via the controller buttons, while scrolling the wheel is simulated with the analog stick. The left Joy-Con is used to access various shortcuts, such as speeding up and slowing down time, or moving around different castles. “For those who are used to it, using these shortcuts can make the game smoother,” he explains.

Then, surprise, he plugs in a mouse via a USB port on the Switch 2. A message appears on the screen to indicate that the peripheral is now taking over the console’s integrated controls. The integration is well thought out, since it is possible to keep the left Joy-Con in the other hand to use the shortcuts, while abandoning the right one in favor of the PC mouse.

It remains to be seen whether the Switch 2 will also support wireless mice. The console is Bluetooth compatible, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that support will be operational. We hope this is the case, as using a wired mouse may not always be practical, especially when using a portable console.
