The Last of Us season 2 is over, but there's good news if you still want more

HBO Max aired the final episode of season 2 of The Last of Us this Sunday. The future of the series is already official, however, and that's good news if the cinematic cliffhanger of the finale left you wanting more.

The Last of Us season 2 is over, but there's good news if you still want more

The Last of Us season 2 concluded this Sunday with a episode that has everything to make us impatient for the arrival of new episodes. And there is indeed excellent news for all fans of the live-action series based on the video game of the same name. Even before the first episodes of season 2 aired, HBO Max had announced that The Last of Us would be renewed for a season 3.

An option that seems obvious if you love the series. Even though it wasn't necessarily so: from Netflix to Amazon Prime, via Disney+ and other Apple TV+, it is actually quite common for platforms to pull the plug on good stories mid-stream, much to the dismay of fans. All of this, most often, without giving a specific reason.

The Last of Us Season 3 is coming soon

For now, nothing more has been revealed by HBO Max about the next installment of The Last of Us. We therefore do not know what the cast will be, for the most part it could not be more difficult to predict – given what happened in the last season. Or the release date of the first episode of The Last of Us Season 3. It is however possible to derive an approximate window for the release of TLOU Season 2 on HBO Max.

Season 2 was in fact released two years after Season 1, which means that we will have to be patient, in view of a probable arrival of The Last of Us Season 3 during the spring of 2027. The synopsis of Season 3 of The Last of Us should still be based on the video game. At this point, we can imagine that the storyline for TLOU Season 3 will be built around the same three-day period covered in Season 2.

The story mechanics are expected to rely heavily on timeskips, and it's a safe bet that there will be timeskips on several events, this time seen from Ellie's perspective. This possibility, however, is simply based on the plot of The Last of Us Part II, so we should take this information with a grain of salt until more official information is available.
