The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered: A Free Mod That Changes Absolutely Everything

The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered: A Free Mod That Changes Absolutely Everything

Those who thought we'd have to wait months to see The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Remastered in virtual reality were wrong. Barely a few days after its release, passionate modders have already made the game playable in VR. And against all odds, it's running pretty well. Cyrodiil, immersive version, is now possible.

Yes, we can already play Oblivion Remastered in VR

The performance on the Oblivion remaster is the work of a small group of modders well known in the VR sphere. Thanks to the combined work of praydog, Keyser, and Pande4360, along with a demo on the LunchAndVR YouTube channel, we were able to see a working VR version of Oblivion Remastered on launch day.

In the video, the player explores the dungeons at the beginning of the game, fights some rats, casts spells... and everything works. No crashes, no obvious graphical bugs. The rendering is clean, and the sensations are there. We're not far from the level of an official port.

Unreal Engine 5, the key to the miracle

This small feat would not have been possible without a major development: Oblivion Remastered runs on Unreal Engine 5. Thanks to this, modder praydog was able to apply his UEVR tool, a plugin that quickly transforms any UE5 game into a VR experience. From there, other modders fine-tuned everything with specific profiles for controls and performance. The result: a VR mod available just a few hours after the official launch. Unheard of.

Obviously, all of this doesn't run on an old laptop. To run the game in VR, LunchAndVR uses a luxury configuration: RTX 4090, Intel i9-13900, 64 GB of RAM, with a Quest 3 as a headset. And even then, he plays Oblivion Remastered at medium quality with DLSS enabled. In other words, you'll need a powerful machine if you want to try the experience without too many compromises. But for the curious equipped, it's already playable.

At this stage, everything isn't perfect yet. Motion tracking is limited (three axes instead of six), and some interactions still need to be refined. But the essentials are there: moving, fighting, casting spells... it works, and that's already very impressive for a mod still in testing.
