The Tomb Raider franchise has been keeping a low profile for several months. But new clues suggest that things are moving behind the scenes. According to a recent financial report, development of the next installment is well underway, despite an internal delay. Crystal Dynamics, which is leading the project, has even reportedly called on an external partner to speed things up.
Is development in its final stages for Tomb Raider?
Officially, no title has yet been announced. However, everything indicates that Tomb Raider is indeed the "delayed AAA" mentioned in a document published by Embracer Group, the studio's parent company. This report mentions a major game being pushed back to the 2026/2027 fiscal year, meaning a possible release between April 2026 and March 2027.
At the same time, we learned that an agreement has been signed with an external partner (whose name is unknown) to support the studio on one of its major projects. It's hard not to see a connection with the next adventure of Lara Croft, which remains the most iconic franchise in the Crystal Dynamics catalog.
Welcome support to avoid another delay
This external partnership comes as the development of Tomb Raider already seems well advanced. A recent job postingfor a Senior Level Designer refers to managing "strike" teams, a term often used to refer to targeted interventions in the final phase of production.
This tends to confirm that the Tomb Raider game is at the end of development, but still requires several months of fine-tuning. Embracer also mentions in its report a desire to "take a few additional quarters" to ensure the final quality of the game.
Without official confirmation yet, attention is turning to the upcoming events in the calendar, and in particular the Summer Game Fest 2025, which could serve as a showcase for a first proper presentation. After several years of waiting, fans are finally hoping to see the game in action, and get a better idea of what this new Tomb Raider will offer, both in terms of content and style.
