WhatsApp prepares voice and video calls from the web

WhatsApp is currently working on integrating voice and video calls directly into its web client. Until now, these features were reserved for the mobile apps and desktop versions for Windows and macOS. According to WABetaInfo, familiar phone and camera icons have begun appearing in the web interface during ongoing tests.

The same experience across all devices

Since a recent update, WhatsApp has already revised the way calls are made on mobile and desktop by offering a single drop-down menu for calls in individual and group chats. On a browser, the experience should follow the same logic: in a chat between two people, a button will allow you to choose between voice or video call, while in group chats, the icon will display the video call option by default, with the possibility of switching to an audio call.

The goal is to make the WhatsApp experience more consistent, regardless of the device or system used. Eventually, users connected via Chrome, Safari, Edge, or any other compatible browser will be able to make and receive calls without needing to download the app.

With this new feature, WhatsApp intends to strengthen the appeal of its web client, which has been particularly popular since its interface redesign. Until now limited to messaging and media sharing, the web version of WhatsApp will now align with the features of the mobile and desktop apps.

This evolution is necessary: online communication has become essential, whether for work or for family and friends. The ability to make a call from any browser without additional installation brings WhatsApp closer to other communication tools like Microsoft Teams, which already offer great flexibility on the web.

For now, the feature is still in the development phase. Specific details—such as call quality or incoming call management—remain to be confirmed. But early indications suggest that WhatsApp is aiming to offer a similar experience to its mobile apps: a simple interface for initiating, receiving, and managing calls, perhaps even with the ability to switch between voice and video calls mid-conversation.

No specific launch date has been announced yet. However, it seems likely that users will soon be able to make WhatsApp calls from a simple browser tab, without any additional hardware constraints.
