Why is Mission: Impossible 7 no longer available on Paramount+ and Canal+?

Three years after his last film adventures, Ethan Hunt is back in action. A brief return for the spy played by Tom Cruise, who was used to keeping viewers waiting between four and six years. But The Final Reckoning is not an opus like the others; it is the second part of an adventure conceived as a farewell diptych. To mark the farewell to the character born in 1996 in Brian de Palma's film, Christopher McQuarrie had the choice of shooting two films in a row. In front of his camera, Ethan Hunt faced an artificial intelligence called The Entity.

While Paramount abandoned the title The Dead Reckoning – Part 2, adopting the name The Final Reckoning, it must be admitted that we will have to remember all the elements mentioned in 2023 in cinemas to have a good understanding of this eighth film. No need to panic, since it was released in theaters more than 17 months ago. According to the media timeline, it has been available on subscription streaming platforms for several years. However, after a quick look at Paramount+ and Canal+, it seems to have disappeared. But where has it gone?

Watching Mission on Paramount+, impossible (for the moment)

Since 2022, the rules of the game when it comes to media timelines have changed. Now, subscription streaming platforms must wait between 15 and 17 months before offering films in their catalog (9 for Disney+). Paramount+, which has the advantage of being attached to the eponymous studio, can therefore make its projects available to its users a year and a half after their release. In theory, MI7 should therefore be available since December. And it was.

Except that the new regulations also stipulate that free channels benefit from a period of exclusivity when their turn comes. For films pre-financed or purchased by free-to-air television channels, this deadline is set at 22 months. For a short period, entities such as Paramount+, but also Netflix and Disney+, must temporarily remove the films in question from their catalogs. This is also why Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has left Disney+ and will not return until July 1st.

In a few days, M6 and its M6+ platform will have the privilege of hosting the penultimate adventures of Ethan Hunt. Mission: Impossible 7 or Dead Reckoning will be broadcast for the first time in free-to-air on June 6th. At the time of writing, it has not yet arrived on M6+, but should do so following its broadcast this evening.
